WishList Live 2010 Review – Membership and Community Sites

WishList Member LiveIf you want your business to thrive online then you should not miss this annual conference.

Whether online is “a” channel or “the” channel for your business, there is a wealth of relevant information shared at WishList Live. It’s is most definitely not “get rich quick” nor is it just based around the WishList Membership Plugin for WordPress (although that’s a significant part of it).

An array of speakers cover topics including web copywriting, themes, lead generation, strategy on building and retaining a community and content development. I had the privilege of attending WishList Live 1 in 2008, and WishList Live 2010 shows substantial growth in the WishList community since then.

If you’re not familiar, WishList Member is a WordPress plugin from WishList Products that allows you to turn your WordPress site into a membership site.

WishList Live, is the annual conference hosted by Stu McLaren and Tracy Childers, founders of WishList Products.

This year WishList Live had a number of notable speakers from inside and outside the WordPress community including:

As a co-organizer of OpenCamp I can speak to the challenge of putting together a 2 day conference with so many great speakers, none of whom disappointed.

For attendees, the main dangers of conferences like this is getting overwhelmed by all of the good info and never acting on it. In 2008 and especially 2010, I walked away from WishList Live with a head full of new knowledge, ideas and most importantly, actionable items, some of which you are already seeing right here on VSEllis.com.

The only thing that some attendees felt was missing from WishList Live was a more “hands-on” session or track for the plugin itself. While you probably don’t need that if you’re already set up and running WishList Member, I can see how that would be useful to new-comers.

Finally, I should mention that Stu and Tracy practice what they preach. Their own membership community, WishList Insider, kicked off in 2010 as a place for members to share ideas, help each other and learn. There are regular bonuses including themes, discounts and some very useful plugins. I have it on good authority that the membership price is going up in Jan-2011 so if you are at all interested in getting involved in the Insider community don’t wait to sign up. Hopefully I’ll see you in there!

While WishList Live is more about marketing and community building than the plugin itself, Stu, Tracy and speakers have such a wealth of knowledge and present it so well that I plan to make it an annual trek, and think you should too.

What do you think? Would you be interested in a conference like this?

If you were there, did you get as much out of it as I did?
