When I first started VSEllis.com (circa 2000) I had little idea of what I wanted to write about. Over the years VSEllis has changed many times but gradually settled into the focus it has today. While my vision of what VSEllis.com can be continues to evolve, the mission remains the same: to make web and mobile technology easier for people to use and understand.

In particular, I’ll be focusing a heavily on content and content strategy, particularly in the first quarter of 2011.

I’ve been doing IT stuff professionally for over 12 years now and still live an breathe tech. My promise is to strive to continually do a better and better job of not only explaining tech stuff to you, but to also provide solutions to daily problems, answers to questions, information and resources you can put to use in your business or your life.

So here’s what’s coming in 2011:

A New Look And Feel

The new look is simple, clean and identifiable. I went with a minimalistic look because I want to put the emphasis and focus on the content. I also wanted to make a point (and practice what I preach); that being aesthetically pleasing doesn’t mean having to be fancy or flashy, and good, useful content is why people will come to and stay on your site.

More Audio & Video

I’m going to be doing a lot with audio and video including a new audio show called Relentless Business that will come out every monday. Relentless Business will be a gritty look and what it takes to get it done, no excuses, no BS. I’ve got a ton of great guests and interviews lined up already. It’s going to be fun and entertaining. I’m also going to be doing a lot more video starting with “Coffee Talk,” casual talks with awesome people, which will come out monthly and “Profiles,” which will be an interview with a featured person. Then there will be the random videos, conference reporting, etc…

All of it will get wrapped up into what will be the VSELLIS Podcast and will have it’s own subscription link & RSS feed.

Recurring Content

Every Friday we’ll do a WordPress plugin review and one Thursday a month we’ll cover a WordPress theme or framework.

The recurring stuff includes

Relentless Business (Every Monday)

Profiles (1st Thursday of the Month)

Coffee Talk (2nd Thursday of the Month)

Theme Reviews (3rd Thursday of the Month)

Newsletter (Every Wednesday)

Plugin Reviews (Every Friday)

Blog Posts

I’m going to be posting and writing a lot more so if you want to keep up I’d be sure to subscribe to the RSS feed. On the days not mentioned above you’ll be getting the regular blogs posts during the week.

A Membership Area

I’m still going to be cranking out a ton of free content but I’m going to augment it with a members only area. This was a big decision for me. Providing a membership area is a lot of work, particularly when my goal is to so completely over-deliver that you never what to leave. But for me, it is the best way to deliver the tools, knowledge, discounts and other resources I’ve amassed over the years to those who need it and are willing put it to use. By putting a pay wall between the world at large and some (certainly not all) of my stuff, I can ensure that I can continue to be there to help in the most efficient way possible.

I’m still building out the membership content and plan to launch Feb 1 but here’s a snapshot of what will be in the members area:

Themes (some of which will be exclusive to this site)

A Knowledge Base: Including code snippets, solutions to common problems, how to’s and more

iAnswer: Personally answered questions, and if I don’t know the answer I’ll figure it out for you!

Members only Deals and Discounts: Including on other projects I’m involved with, those I can drum up through my contacts and anything I stumble across

Library including:

eBooks

Reports

Conference Notes (I go to a LOT of conferences and find a lot of good resources)

MindMaps & Templates

Taxonomy Schemas

Webinar Discounts

Discussion Forums

Full access to extended video & audio including transcripts, notes & more…

I welcome your feedback on the new look, and the members area. Is there anything else you’d like to see in there?

I haven’t decided on pricing but it will be VERY cost effective, probably in the $7 ot $17 per month range. In all likelihood I’ll start low and once I hit critical mass raise the price. I may also limit the number of members initially.

Here’s another hint, the two weeks before the membership sections goes live I’m going to offer a limited number of free memberships to newsletter subscribers:

If you’re not already on the newsletter, this would be a perfect time to subscribe:

If you join Feb 1, you’ll be listed as a founding member and will have a special access area just for you.

I look forward to seeing you on the inside!

So lately Cali and John & Gio have given me a little crap about my new avatar, Dave thinks I look like Lex Luthor (bah!). No doubt it’s a great picture taken by Leigh Cariccoli so it’s not an affront to her awesome photography skills (you should seriously hire her for an avatar shoot if you can) but rather it’s me, they say I look mean. Ok ok… maybe, but then I kind of like it!

Either way, since “bizarro-evil” Scott doesn’t come around [all that] often, I’ve decided to throw it out there and see what everybody thinks. Since this is spur of the moment I’m not going to get terribly technical about this, I’m just going to post the options in there and let you decide.

Just leave a comment with the number from the image you think makes the best avatar in the comments below. If you think more than one will work then list them in order. I’ll close the comments at the end of the weekend and tally up the results and use that new avatar.

No, I don’t smile a lot in photos and most of these were taken on a very bright sunny day hence the sunglasses.
